Avery’s Homeless Package Initiative

In mid-November, Avery (age 10) came home with an assignment to write a persuasive letter.  He chose to write to a restaurant asking for food donations for the homeless because they need nourishment to get better.  We thought, awesome!  Then about a week ago, he asked if we could make homeless packages and hand them out around Christmas. We immediately said yes, and bought enough for 50 packages.  Captivated by our son’s big heart, and in talking with others, we know we can make more if we ask for help from our friends and family.

Here’s our mission.  To make as many packages as possible with two waves of distribution, one wave by Christmas, and another after the first of the year.  We will be reaching out to places such as The Rock at NoonDay, Joy Junction, and other like organizations to coordinate a safe distribution. Here’s what we are looking for:

  • Socks
  • Gloves
  • Blankets (including mylar)
  • Non-alcoholic wipes
  • Toothbrush/toothpaste
  • Combs
  • Deodorant
  • Sanitary napkins
  • Chapstick
  • Soap
  • Sugar free gum
  • Granola bars
  • Snacks
  • Water
  • Gallon sized Ziploc bags

Homelessness is a major problem in our city. According to the 2017 biennial Point-In-Time Count, coordinated by the New Mexico Coalition to End Homelessness, 1,318 sheltered and unsheltered people are dealing with homelessness in Albuquerque. This count is however, by voluntary admission.

Albuquerque Public Schools reports that at any given time, between 3,500 and 4,000 students classified as homeless, says Monica Armenta, APS Spokesperson.

Danny Whatley, executive director of The Rock at NoonDay, estimates the homeless population at about 4,500 and growing.

Please join us in making a difference, even if for one day, for someone needing hope and a hand.  Drop offs will be accepted at Dearholt Auto Care located at 7201 Wyoming Blvd.

Thank you for your support!

Avery and family
